Privacy Policy

Overview

This extension does not collect any personally identifiable information. Your settings are stored locally on your device and never leave it.

The extension sends a small amount of anonymous, non-identifiable usage data to help us understand how it is used and improve it over time.

Anonymous Analytics

We use Umami, a privacy-focused, open-source analytics platform hosted on our own server (analytics.wrongorbit.com). Umami does not use cookies and does not track users across websites.

The following anonymous events may be recorded:

  • Extension installed or updated (version number only)
  • Popup opened
  • Which controls were used (rotate, flip, scale presets, reset)
  • Effects enabled or disabled
  • Rating widget interaction (star score only)
  • Which keyboard shortcut or in-player button was pressed
  • Which kind of page the extension was running on — a watch page, a Short, or an embedded player — but never the address of that page
  • Your screen resolution and browser language, as standard analytics dimensions not tied to any identifier
  • The YouTube video ID (e.g. dQw4w9WgXcQ) of a video when visual effects are actively applied — this is a public URL parameter and contains no personal information

We do not store: your name, email address, IP address, YouTube account information, or the addresses of the pages you visit. Events carry no page URL at all, so no record of your browsing is assembled. The single exception, stated plainly because a blanket "no watch history" claim would not be true: the video ID above, recorded once for a video you actively apply an effect to, and for no other video you watch. Your IP address is transmitted as part of the standard HTTP request to our analytics server but is not retained in any database. No data is ever sold or shared with third parties.

Local Storage

Your settings (rotation angle, flip, scale, animation preference, and UI state) are stored locally using Chrome's chrome.storage.local API and never transmitted to any server.

External Pages Opened by the Extension

In certain situations the extension opens an external page in your browser:

  • On first install — a welcome page at wrongorbit.com/projects/flip-youtube/welcome/ is opened. This is a standard one-time greeting; no extension data is sent beyond what any normal browser visit includes (URL and IP).
  • On uninstall — Chrome opens wrongorbit.com/projects/flip-youtube/uninstall, an optional feedback page where you can tell us why you removed the extension. Filling it in is entirely voluntary.
  • On rating — answering the "Enjoying it?" question opens wrongorbit.com/projects/flip-youtube/review with your answer as a query parameter (?rating=5 or ?rating=1), which forwards you to the Chrome Web Store review page or to the feedback page accordingly. Nothing beyond that one number is transmitted.

Each of these involves your browser loading a regular web page. The respective servers (ours, and the Chrome Web Store) may log your IP address under their own privacy policies, which are independent of this extension.

Permissions

The extension requests the following permissions:

  • activeTab / scripting — to apply visual transforms to the YouTube video player
  • storage — to save your settings locally on your device
  • youtube.com / youtube-nocookie.com / youtubekids.com — to run on YouTube pages
  • analytics.wrongorbit.com — to send the anonymous usage events described above
